The action takes place in the modern author of France, mainly in Mans, a city that is located two hundred kilometers from Paris.
Comic Romance is conceived as a parody of high-style fashion novels - instead of wandering knights, its characters are vagrant comedians, countless fights replace fights, and the obligatory abduction scenes in adventure novels are unusually funny. Each chapter is a separate comic episode strung on the core of a simple plot. The novel is notable for its whimsical composition, it is replete with false episodes - as a rule, these are short stories narrated by one of the characters, or memories of heroes. The plots of short stories are taken mainly from the life of noble Moors and Spaniards. I would especially like to say about the novel “My Own Judge” - the history of the Spanish cavalry girl: young Sofia is forced to hide in a man’s dress. Once in the military camp of Emperor Charles V, she shows such courage and military talent that she receives a cavalry regiment under command, and then the appointment of the vice-king of her native Valencia, but, having married, gives all the titles to her husband.
Scarron managed to complete two parts of the novel. Offre, the third after his death, hastily finished the plot.
Three fancifully dressed people appear on the Mansa market - a middle-aged woman, an old man and a handsome young man. This is a wandering troupe. The comedians aroused the wrath of the governor of Tour and lost their comrades during the flight. But the three of them are ready to give a performance in the upper room of the tavern. The local judge, Mr. Rappinier, orders the innkeeper to lend the actors the clothes of young people who play the ball that she has left to preserve for the duration of the performance. The handsome comedian Desten amazes everyone with his skill, but the ball players are, they see their dress on the actors and begin to beat the judge who ordered him without the knowledge of the hosts. The fight becomes universal, and Destin is destined once again to delight the inhabitants of Mans: he mercilessly thrashing people who interrupted the performance. When leaving the tavern, the beaten friends attack Rappinier with swords. Again, the judge saves the life of Destin, and he owns the sword very skillfully, chopping her attackers in the ears. The grateful Rappinier calls the comedians to his house. At night, he raises a terrible commotion, deciding that Ms. Rappinier went to the room of the young comedian. In fact, this is a goat wandering around the house, feeding its orphaned puppies with its milk. The next morning, the judge asks about Desten of the second actor, the stinging Rankyun. According to him, Destin in the troupe recently, and he owes skill to Rankun, and life too. After all, Rankune saved him in Paris when a young man was attacked by robbers who robbed him of some jewels. Upon learning when the attack occurred, the judge and his servant Dogen are terribly embarrassed. On the same day, one of the young men beaten by him in a tavern was mortally wounded by Dogen. Before his death, he calls Destin. To Rappiniero, the actor says that the dying man was just raving. The remaining actors are gathering: the daughter of the old actress, sixteen-year-old Angelica, a student of Destin Leander, several more people. There is not only Etoile - Destin's sister: she has dislocated her leg, and horse-drawn stretchers are sent for her. Some armed riders forcibly inspect all the stretchers on the road. They are looking for a girl with a damaged leg, but kidnap the priest heading to the doctor. Etoile safely arrives in Mans. Angelica and her mother, Cavern, ask young people as a sign of friendship to tell them their story. Destin agrees. He is the son of a village rich man, a man of anecdotal avarice. His parents did not love him, all their attention was absorbed by the offspring of a certain Scottish count given to them for education. Destin is taken to him by his generous godson. The boy is a good student, the company is made up of the children of Baron d’Arc - rude Saint-Far and noble Verville. After graduating, young people go to Italy for military service. In Rome, Destin meets a French lady and her secretly born daughter Leonora. He saves them from the impudence of some traveling Frenchman and, of course, falls in love with his daughter. Leonora is also not indifferent to him, but Saint-Far tells her mother that Destin is just a servant, and the poor girl is taken away, not letting her talk about her feelings. Destena is ambushed and seriously injured by the impudent taught to him when meeting Leonora. Having recovered, Destin seeks death on the battlefields, but instead finds the glory of a desperate grunt. At the end of the campaign, young people return to France. Verville falls in love with his neighbor, Mademoiselle Saldagne. Her parents died, and the petty tycoon wants to send her and her second sister to the monastery, so as not to splurge on a dowry. Destin accompanies a friend on a secret date. Suddenly, Saldan appears - it turns out to be the Roman enemy of our hero. The fight begins, Saldan is slightly injured. After recovering, he challenges Verville to a duel. According to the custom of that time, the second of Verville Destin was forced to fight with the second of Saldan. alas, this is the eldest son of his benefactor Saint-Far. The young man first spares the enemy, but he vilely abuses it. In order not to die, Destin wounds him. Verville disarms Saldanha. The case is settled by a double wedding - Verville marries his lover, Saint-Far - on her sister. The insulted Destin, despite the persuasion of a friend, leaves the house of Baron d’Ark. He again goes to Italy and meets his beloved and her mother on the road. They are looking for the father of Leonora, but their search is unsuccessful, moreover, they stole all the money from them. Destin decides to accompany them.
During the search, the mother of Leonora dies. Robbers kidnap from Destin a diamond-decorated portrait of his beloved father - proof of her origin. In addition, Saldan attacks their trail. The need to hide and the need make young people impersonate themselves as brothers and sisters and, under false names, join the troupe of comedians. In Tours, Saldan meets them again, he is trying to abduct Leonora-Etoile. The story takes several evenings. Meanwhile, a visiting doctor, his Spanish wife, who knows a myriad of fascinating stories, as well as a certain widowed lawyer Ragoten, makes acquaintance with comedians. This little man is impudent, stupid and poorly educated, but has a peculiar talent to always fall into funny alterations described in detail in the novel. He decides that he is in love with Etoile. Rankun agrees to help the lawyer gain her favor, but for now she eats and drinks at his expense. The troupe is invited out of town - there they celebrate the wedding. Comedians come, but the performance was not destined to take place - Angelica was kidnapped. Cavern is sure that the kidnapper is Leander, this is clear from the love letters she found. Destin rushes in pursuit. In a hotel in one of the villages he finds the wounded Leander and listens to his story. Leander joined the troupe only out of love for Angelica. He is a nobleman, and a great inheritance awaits him, but his father does not agree to marry his son with a comedian. He pursued the kidnappers, entered into a fight with them - the villains beat him and left him half dead on the road.
After some time, Angelica herself appears in the hotel - she was taken away by mistake. It became clear when on the way the captors met Etoile. She tried using the bribed servant to lure Rappinier into his networks. The servant was beaten, Angelica was abandoned in the forest, and Etoile was taken away to an unknown destination. There is no doubt that these are tricks of Saldan. However, with the help of Verville, who appeared on time, Destin helps out his beloved, this is all the more easy since a horse fell under Saldan and he was terribly hurt. Manages to bring Rappinier into the clear water, the judge is forced to return the portrait of Leonora's father: it is he and his late servant robbed Destin in Paris. Comedians move from Mansa to Alencon. Ragoten, in order not to part with the subject of his love and show off his talents, enters the troupe. But Leander leaves the comrades - the news came that his father is dying and wants to say goodbye to his son. The very first performance in a new place could end badly - the restless Saldan recovered from his injury and again tried to kidnap Etoile. But fans of the theater from among the local nobles take the side of comedians. Saldan dies in a shootout, which he himself provoked. Leander inherits from his father a baronial title and fortune, but is not going to part with the theater and remains in the troupe. It was decided to play two weddings at the same time. On the eve of a happy day, Cavern meets his brother, also a comedian, with whom they were separated as children. So everyone is happy except Ragoten. He tries to play suicide, and then drowns in the river, trying to water the horse. The angry prankster Rankun also leaves the troupe - Brother Cavern will take his place.
