He worried about the soldier, was proud of him. It was at that moment that the hero first realized his loss.
Similar feelings are experienced by the heroes of Anatoly Aleksin's work “First Day - Last Day of Creation”. The orphans, whose fathers were shot or died in the war, invented heroes for themselves, looked for their photographs on the pages of books, and told stories that they themselves wanted to believe. Those people who raised them invented these stories so that the child does not feel superfluous in the world.
Example from personal life: When I was little, my friend Seryozha talked about his grandfather from America and about various toys that he would bring to him. Later I found out that Seryozha did not have grandfathers, like dads, but his mom came up with a story that my friend believed in. With this tale, she tried to save him from the bitter realization of her own uselessness.
